God’s Own Country, Really?

What is common between feeding an elephant a bomb hidden inside a pineapple, routine killing of dogs, slaughtering calf in the middle of the street to make a political point, and rape of a 17-year-old girl by 44 men for over 4 years?

All this transpires only in the Mallapuram district of Kerala, God’s own country.

Surely, whichever God the residents of this barbaric state pray to would be ashamed of Kerala being called his/her abode.

It is the brutality of all these events that make a normal man shiver with disgust and repulsion. What would it take to rape a girl for 4 years by 44 men? I don’t even have words. Do you?

As per the news sources, the police have arrested 33 of them and slapped various charges under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO).

But I am making a larger point.

Why all this news of brutality crops up regularly only from Kerala, the most literate state in India?

When was the last time you heard 44 men raping a child for 4 years? And mind you, the media is just featuring this as ‘normal news’

Without giving any color to a ghastly act of barbarism, if this happened in a BJP ruled state, by this time Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Vadra, Rajdeep, Rahul Kanwal, Barkha Dutt, Ravish Kumar, Swara Bhaskar, Javed Akhtar everyone would have been camping there, crying hoarse.

God forbid if the state of the accident was BJP and the girl a Dalit, the echo of aching vocal cords would have reached New York and the UN. Congress paid panelists would have been busy mocking the “Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ initiative.

But as the state of the crime Kerala, no even a whisper, leave alone outcry. Shame on us as a society, a nation where even a crime as horrific as this is judged by political compulsion.
